What the PSTN Switch-off Delay Means For Your Business

PSTN Switch-off Delay: Why You Should Still Act Now

After a brief pause in the PSTN switchover to digital, BT has announced its migration programme is back in force and the countdown has begun to the end of PSTN in January 2027.

That may seem a long way off, but it’s important to note that it’s BT’s final deadline for all customers to have switched. For most customers the switchover will be far sooner.

Last month BT began resuming non-voluntary migrations, beginning with those who have not used their land line recently. BT has indicated the pace of forced switchovers will increase from summer this year.

Howard Watson, Chief Security and Networks Officer, BT Group, said: “The urgency for switching customers onto digital services grows by the day because the 40-year-old analogue landline technology is increasingly fragile.”

Get ahead of the curve with your PSTN migration

With the switchover unavoidable, CloudClevr recommends customers begin their migration process now. With the move affecting traditional telephone lines as well services such as ISDN, by making the move ahead of any forced switchover it gives you time to consider your options.

It’s vital you:

  • Understand your systems. What is using PSTN or ISDN? EPOS machines, door entry systems, lifts, CCTV security and more could be using these methods. What needs to migrate and what could be updated to IP connectivity?
  • Consider your connectivity. For systems you are migrating, what connectivity options are best to support these legacy technologies? You’ll potentially be making decisions that will last for years, so it’s important to get them right.
  • Give yourself testing time. Give yourself space to test any systems and ensure they work if migrated or updated. You want the time to explore alternatives if things don’t go to plan and it’s vital that’s done before any forced switchover.

CloudClevr is here to support you with your PSTN switchover

With the PSTN switchover planned to take place over the next couple of years, when is the best time for you to begin your migration? The answer is simple: right now.

A forced switchover could affect your company at any time and as the deadline nears there there’s a risk of extended timescales if engineer resource is in demand.

The PSTN switchover is happening and is increasing pace. The only choice is between an orderly migration where you can take stock of your existing systems and connectivity needs, vs. doing the job staring down the barrel of being cut off. We encourage anyone who wants to understand their migration options to contact us now.

An expert in connectivity options, and the services that use them, CloudClevr can walk you through the best options for your business. We can help you decide your best long-term options and help you every step of the way with migration. Contact us today to find out more.
