Mitel and Zoom’s new hybrid communication solution: What does it mean to your business?

Following the strategic partnership announced in September 2024, Zoom and Mitel have unveiled a new hybrid communication and collaboration solution.

This latest solution combines Zoom’s AI-powered UCaaS solution with Mitel’s PBX based telephony systems.

This is perfect for customers who want the advanced features of a cloud-based solution, while preserving the control and security offered by on-premise communication solutions. ‘The best of both worlds’, as Zoom and Mitel call it.’

The solution is now available for Mitel’s OpenScape Voice and OpenScape 4000 platforms. It will be expanded to MiVoice Business in the coming weeks and MiVoice 5000 and MX-ONE solutions towards the end of 2025.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a hybrid integration like this. Avaya, for example, already offers a hybrid solution through its partnership with RingCentral, which is very similar to the Mitel-Zoom solution.

An integrated experience in one application

With Zoom Workplace fully integrated into Mitel telephony systems, you can call, chat, or meet from a single interface without switching applications. You can also easily switch calls between desktop and mobile and have a synchronised experience.

Users also have the flexibility to convert a Mitel call into a Zoom meeting and use features such as Zoom Docs, Whiteboards, Clips, and the AI companion, which is in-built across all these tools, to get transcripts, summarise meetings, and more.

What does this mean for Mitel users?

The pedigree and robustness of Mitel have made it challenging for some users to fully move into the cloud, especially in the hospitality sector where Mitel systems are a vital part of their technology ecosystem.

At our recent ‘Future of Communications in Hospitality’ event, Kimberley Ramsey, Sales Director at TigerTMS echoed similar sentiment, highlighting that many high-end hotel brands continue to favour on-premise or hybrid systems to maintain local data control, enhance security, and ensure system redundancy. For hospitality customers, many of which already rely heavily on Mitel, this announcement is particularly relevant.

This new offering allows Mitel customers to protect their existing telephony investments while also gaining access to Zoom’s innovative features and AI capabilities.

On the partnership, Rob Wiles, Channel Partner Manager at Zoom, said, “We’re supporting customer choice by allowing them to maintain the investment and trust they have in on-premises equipment and we’re elevating that experience using cloud technology from Zoom.”

Why hybrid cloud?

For years, many assumed cloud solutions would fully replace on-premise systems but the reality has proven more nuanced. While cloud adoption surged during the pandemic, it’s clear that the future isn’t strictly cloud or on-premise, but a blend of both. More and more organisations are now recognising the value of hybrid models.

A recent research suggested an overwhelming 92% of respondents prioritise a hybrid communications model for flexibility and security.

This announcement is a direct response to that demand, reinforcing that there’s no single right technology. Different organisations need different solutions, and those can coexist.
